CBD and Alzheimer's Disease

CBD and Alzheimer's Disease

First off, what is Alzheimer’s Disease (AD)?

AD is a neurodegenerative disease that affects 33 million people worldwide and can cause significant cognitive decline that begins with communication, learning, and short-term memory problems (1).

AD disease can progress and by the time it reaches the later stages of the disease, one can experience trouble with facial recognition (which can be extremely hard emotionally for family members) and lose the ability to feed and dress our self (1).

The most alarming thing about AD is that there is no known form of treatment that can stop or reverse the disease process and because of this, medical researchers and professionals are looking for other alternatives to improve how we face AD (1).

This is where CBD, a magnificent plant compound comes to the rescue!

AD is accompanied by neuroinflammation and oxidative stress and if you have been listening to me talk, you know that CBD can positively impact both (1)!

This is because CBD has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties (1).

In fact, CBD has such powerful antioxidant properties that they offer neuroprotection for our central nervous and peripheral nervous system, giving CBD the spotlight when it comes to addressing neurodegenerative diseases like AD (as well as others, including Parkinson’s)  (1).

Not only was CBD shown to offer neuroprotection through the antioxidant properties, but the fact that this naturally derived plant compound has anti-inflammatory properties that aid in reducing inflammation, it can help with the development and progression of AD (1).

The study highlighted the importance of utilizing CBD and THC together because of the synergistic properties that help amplify each other’s potential, which is known as the entourage effect. The entourage effect was shown to improve their overall therapeutic potential when addressing the disease process of AD (1).

The study concluded that CBD was shown to reduce reactive gliosis (a positive thing) and promote new growth of neurons (neurogenesis), which is important when understanding how we slow or reverse the disease process of AD (1).

CBD was shown to reverse and prevent the development of cognitive development decline in rat models, which also highlights the therapeutic potential of CBD when addressing AD (1).

This is huge because nothing out there on the market can help us deal with AD!

This information is being published in medical journals around the world, yet no one knows this information exists. It is obvious that information isn’t being shared to those who need it most and it’s our job to help one another.

Talk about one amazing plant! Plant medicine at its finest.
