Cannabinoids and Their Impact on Chronic Kidney Disease

Cannabinoids and Their Impact on Chronic Kidney Disease

What do the medical experts have to say about cannabis and the symptoms associated with chronic kidney disease?
🐝
According to the Canadian Journal of Kidney Health and Disease (CJKHD), the purpose of this study was to highlight the impact cannabis has on the symptoms associated with (CKD) (Ho, Martinusen, Lo, 2019).
🌲

Cannabinoids were shown to be beneficial for chronic pain, nausea/vomiting (n/v), anorexia, coping with itchy skin that is associated with high levels of urea in the blood (seen in later stages of renal diseases), and insomnia, all of which are associated with CKD (Ho, Martinusen, Lo, 2019).

While there are CB1 and CB2 receptors located in the kidneys, their function is not well understood, more studies need to be conducted to get a better understanding of the role the ECS plays in kidney health (Ho, Martinusen, Lo, 2019).
🐝
The study stated that cannabinoids have shown to be more promising to deal with chronic pain that is associated with CKD and stated that it is a better alternative than opioids because of the adverse drug effects and ability to cause addiction that is commonly seen in opioid use (Ho, Martinusen, Lo, 2019).
🌲
The study then went on to conclude that since cannabis legalization in America and Canada, there has been a reduction in opioid use and opioid related deaths, which is a huge bonus (Ho, Martinusen, Lo, 2019).
♻️
The more we study cannabis and understand the ECS, the more we will understand cannabis and its impact on kidney health. With that being said, there is limited data on cannabis and kidney health.
